I recently attended a board meeting where I sit as a director. As a passing remark during a break, I told fellow board members about my last twenty years researching and last seven years writing The Code. “It just may be one of the best kept secrets on earth. The secret of human nature,” I told them.

Later in the day a fellow board member said he thought it a “pretty bold statement.”

He was being kind. It was a crazy bold statement. Everyone thought the same, I’m sure. This guy is crazy.

Boiling down the crazy talk, here’s the claim I make in The Code. We run our lives from five laws. These laws drive everything we think, say, and do. But no one can say what they are. This is a big reason we have so many problems and miss so many opportunities to improve, as individuals, organizations, and societies. Learning these laws could radically improve our lives.

Yep, sounds crazy to me too. But on deeper thought, maybe not. We run our lives instinctively, which means we do a lot of things without ability to explain. A fish can’t explain how it swims. But it still swims. A toddler can’t explain how she runs. But that doesn’t stop her. Same with us. We don’t often know how we do what we do. Or why. We just do. This is why the human race has survived so long ignorant of the five laws. We follow them automatically, unconsciously.
