On one hand, the world is ours. We have more freedom and power to do more things than ever before in human history.

On the other hand, the world isn’t ours, and never has been. There’s not near enough time to do all the things we can do and want to do. We can’t go north without rejecting south. We can’t choose this without rejecting that. Whenever we choose one thing we reject all other things in that moment of choice.

Choices shatter worlds. Worlds of possibility. Worlds of options.

When we decide, we kill off our options. The word decide is a killer word that comes from the Latin caedere, “to cut, to kill.” It’s the reason decide sounds like homicide and suicide. Whenever we decide, we kill options. Options must die for choices to live.

We look around and see all we could do, if we had the time, the energy, the money, the opportunity. But we don’t have the time, the energy, the money, or the opportunity. So unless we’re willing to decide, we’ll live in a clutter of indecision, hoarding garbage dreams, our hearts piled to the ceilings in psychological junk.

There’s a time to kill. And that time is now. Decide.
